The first week of classes here began in the wake of unrest following the Aug. 9 death of African-American teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson. Events were planned to not only allow students to lend a voice to the issues, but to bring members of the community together to talk and support one another.

| School of Medicine faculty, staff and students came together for three town hall meetings last week in response to the tragic events in Ferguson. Attendees talked about how to help Ferguson and how to improve diversity and inclusion at the university. Two more meetings will be held on the Medical Campus this week.

| A team of scientists led by university physicist Henric Krawczynski, PhD, has been working hard to launch a jetliner-sized balloon high above Fort Sumner, N.M. — an endeavor that’s far from child’s play. The hope is to send a sensitive telescope known as X-Calibur to stare fixedly at black holes and other exotic astronomical objects.

| The updated Law Café in Anheuser-Busch Hall has opened for business. The renovated space, operated by Bon Appétit, is the only dining area on campus to feature Salad By Design and one of only two locations with a carvery. The Law Café also features pizza, soups, grab-and-go items, pastries and Kaldi’s coffee and espresso drinks.

| Students head from the South 40 to their first day of class for the fall semester on Aug. 25. The First Year Center offers a variety of fun events for students to get to know their new home.
